Tanning Bed Facts Confuse Tanners



Tanning bed facts can be confusing, depending on whom you talk to about them. There are facts that seem to indicate tanning beds are safe and at the same time caution against tanning bed use. If you were to ask your dermatologist, "Are tanning beds safe?" the answer would be, "No!" She would tell you that you could get some exposure outside, with sun block only. We do need exposure to the sun for Vitamin D production. However, very little is needed to do what we need it to do.

People believe that tanning indoors is better because the lamps filter UVB rays and protect you from burning. Burning does increase skin cancer risks. However, you can still burn in a tanning bed if you burn outdoors. Additionally, the higher concentration of UVA rays used in tanning beds has now been linked by the FDA to a higher risk of malignant melanoma and potential immune system damage. It's a myth that because the beds use sunlamps that they can control the amount of UVA or UVB exposure, so you really don't know what your skin is getting.

Tanning beds are tempting because of their convenience. You can get some color quickly and not be a slave to the weather. It's a modern day wonder to be able to have a year round tan. But it's important to be educated about the potential hazards to your skin. Take time to look it over, and if you must tan be cautious. The tan looks good now, but your skin is yours forever.
