Tanning Bed Itching: A Common Problem

Tanning bed itching can be caused by a variety of issues. The most likely cause is you're not using enough tanning lotion when you tan, and your skin is drying out from the ultraviolet light exposure. Dry skin itches. The outer layer of dry skin is actually dead, and your skin itches to prompt you to scratch and exfoliate the dead skin.

You may also not be exfoliating properly prior to tanning, and the dead skin is getting trapped under the layer of tanning lotion. This draws bacteria, which cause itching and may even cause a rash. If you exfoliate prior to tanning and use enough lotion before and during your tanning session, you will likely alleviate the itching.

If you've taken care of these problems and you're still experiencing itching, it's probably due to one of two issues. You may still need more tanning lotion, or your bulbs may be emitting too much UV-B light. Check the UV percentage on your tanning bed bulbs. If it states 5% or less, it's probably not the UV-B that is causing you a problem, and you need more lotion. UV-B is the form of ultraviolet light most likely to damage your skin, and damaged skin itches.

If you're still having problems with skin irritation, you may be allergic to an ingredient in your tanning bed lotion. Look for either lanolin or nut oils. These are the most likely the offending allergens in your tanning bed lotion. Exchange your lotion for a lanolin-free or nut oil-free lotion.

If you still have skin irritation, you may have a more serious problem than a tanning bed lotions allergic reaction. When using a public tanning bed, ask the attendants if anyone else has complained about skin irritation. It may be a skin infection passed from user to user. And then go to see your dermatologist He or she can help you find the cause of your irritation and a way to treat your itching.
